Who makes it

Two sisters, one workroom

Chhaap Kurtis is the two of us. We choose the cloth in Jaipur, cut it, stitch it, pack it, and answer every message that arrives — there is nobody else in the middle. Both photographs were taken at home, in pieces we made ourselves.

Ask us for a change to the length, the sleeve or the neck and you are asking the person who will actually cut it.

Silai — the stitching

Cut for one person at a time

We are not a factory and we do not grade to a standard size. Two of us choose the cloth, cut it and stitch it — which is exactly why the fit is the part we will change for free.

Kapda कपड़ा

We buy our cloth ourselves in Jaipur rather than ordering rolls sight-unseen — mul, cambric, kota doria, chanderi. Every length is washed before a single cut, so the shrinking happens to us and not to you.

Naap नाप

Send your measurements and we cut to them. Length, sleeve and neck depth are yours to change at no extra charge — that is the whole point of buying from two people instead of a shelf.

Silai सिलाई

Stitched, finished at the neckline and hem, pressed, and looked over once more before it is folded. If something is not right when it reaches you, tell us — we would rather know than not.

Our mark is a kamal, the lotus, holding the two letters of our name. Chhaap is run by Ruchika Khatria and Komal Khatria — two of us, answering every message ourselves, from picking the cloth to folding the parcel.

Fit

Sizes & how to measure

All measurements in inches, taken on the body — not on the garment. We cut with about 2″ of ease at the bust, so don't add any yourself.

SizeBustWaist HipKurta lengthSleeve

Between two sizes? Take the larger one. Cotton gives up about 2–3% on its first cold wash, and a kurti that skims is easier to live with than one that pulls. Custom lengths and sleeve changes cost nothing — send your numbers with the order and we cut to them instead.

Tape in hand

Five measurements

Measure over a thin fitted top, never over a kurti. Keep the tape snug and level — not tight. The ease is our job.

  1. BustAround the fullest part, arms down, tape level all the way round your back.
  2. WaistThe narrowest part of your torso, usually about an inch above the navel.
  3. HipAround the fullest part, roughly 8″ below the waist.
  4. Kurta lengthFrom the shoulder seam beside your neck, straight down to where you want the hem to sit.
  5. SleeveFrom the shoulder point, down the outside of the arm, to where the sleeve should end.

Living with the cloth

The wash label, in full

Printed cotton behaves differently from a polyester mix. Five minutes of care in the first wash decides how the piece ages for the next two years.

Hand washCold, first time alone
No bleachNo soda, no brighteners
Dry in shadeInside out, on a line
Iron mediumInside out
No tumble dryHeat sets the creases

The first wash decides everything

  1. First wash alone, in cold waterAdd a fistful of rock salt. Salt helps set the colour and keeps the white ground white. Wash it by hand.
  2. Never soakTen minutes is plenty. Cloth left sitting in water lets loose colour settle back onto the white ground.
  3. Mild liquid detergent onlyNo bleach, no soda, no powder with optical brighteners — they dull a printed cotton fast.
  4. Dry in shade, inside outDirect Indian sun will flatten the colour in a season. Shade keeps it deep.
  5. Iron medium, inside outFrom the second wash onwards, machine wash cold on gentle, or dry clean, is perfectly safe.

What to expect over time

  1. A little colour in the first two washesThat is loose surface colour rinsing off, not the print failing. It settles by the third wash.
  2. Around 2–3% shrinkageAlmost all of it on the first wash. Our fabric is pre-washed, which takes out most of it before we cut.
  3. Softening, not fadingCotton keeps getting softer. Kept out of direct sun, the colour stays where it started.
  4. Store it folded, not hungA hanger drags the shoulder out of shape over a season. Fold it, keep it dry, keep it out of the light.

Frequently asked

Questions, sorted

The ones that come up most in our DMs. If yours isn't here, it takes us less time to answer it than it took you to read this line.

Ordering & payment

How do I pay?

UPI or bank transfer. We send a payment link on WhatsApp once we have confirmed stock and the final total including shipping — or you can pay our UPI ID directly, 9783361611@ptsbi. Please send us the screenshot after you pay.

Do you take cash on delivery?

No. Every order is prepaid — UPI or bank transfer only. It is a two-person workshop, and a refused COD parcel is a piece we have already cut.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no login, no cart, no card. Your bag lives in your own browser until you send it to us as a WhatsApp message.

Fit & sizing

Can I get a custom size or length?

Yes, and there is no extra charge. Open the bag, expand Custom fit, and send us your measurements with the order. Custom pieces take 7–10 days and cannot be returned, so please measure carefully.

I'm between two sizes — which one?

The larger one. Cotton shrinks a little on its first cold wash, and we cut with about 2″ of ease at the bust already. Or skip the guessing and send us your measurements.

Will it shrink?

Roughly 2–3% on the first wash. Our fabric is pre-washed before we cut, so most of that is already out of it.

Cloth & colour

Will the colour run?

A little, in the first two or three washes — that is loose surface colour, not the print failing. Wash it separately in cold water with rock salt and it settles down. Colour still bleeding after the third wash is not normal; message us and we will sort it out.

Why do two pieces in the same print look different?

Because we cut each one from a length of cloth by hand. Where a motif lands on the yoke, the sleeve or the hem shifts a little from piece to piece, so no two are laid out identically. That is normal for cut-and-stitch, and not a fault.

Delivery & returns

How long until it reaches me?

Ready stock is dispatched in 3–5 days, made-to-order in 7–10, plus courier time to your city. Tracking comes to you on WhatsApp the day it leaves us.

Do you ship outside India?

Not at the moment — PAN India only. If you are abroad, message us anyway; we can sometimes arrange it.

Can I return or exchange?

No. Every piece is cut and stitched to order, so a returned garment cannot go back on the shelf. Please check the size guide and ask us anything at all before you pay — we would far rather answer ten questions than send the wrong fit.

Still stuck

Ask us. It's just the two of us reading.

Ruchika and Komal answer the messages themselves — usually the same day, between about 10am and 8pm. Send a photo, send your measurements, send a screenshot of something you liked.
